About

Founded in 2022, the Canadian Underground Infrastructure Innovation Centre (CUIIC) is a national initiative based at the University of Alberta. With partners and members spanning across Canada, CUIIC is dedicated to advancing sustainable, cost-effective underground infrastructure solutions through research, training, and industry collaboration.

Our Mission

To tackle current and future challenges in underground infrastructure and trenchless construction through research and collaboration with stakeholders.

To drive innovation, collaboration, and research across Canada, advancing solutions for the underground infrastructure industry.

To foster excellence in education and develop the next generation of skilled professionals and leaders in the industry.

Connecting Underground Infrastructure Sectors

CUIIC fosters collaboration across diverse domains, forming interdisciplinary research teams to drive innovation and reduce risks associated with underground construction. The underground sector encompasses various industries—including water, wastewater, transportation, gas distribution, energy, power, and telecommunications—each facing similar challenges in building and maintaining underground infrastructure. By connecting these sectors, CUIIC creates opportunities for knowledge sharing and coordinated problem-solving.
