March 17, 2025– Edmonton, AB – The Canadian Underground Infrastructure Innovation Centre (CUIIC) at the University of Alberta is pleased to announce that its research project, “Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction in Design, Construction, Repair, and Maintenance of Underground Infrastructure,” has been approved for a major funding support from Alberta Innovates through the Campus Alberta Small Business Engagement (CASBE) program.
The CASBE program, in partnership with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), supports collaboration between Alberta’s post-secondary institutions and small-to-medium-sized Alberta companies. This funding will further CUIIC’s work in developing low-emission solutions for underground infrastructure, supporting industry innovation and reducing environmental impact.
“This funding is a crucial step toward advancing sustainable underground infrastructure,” said Dr. Alireza Bayat, Director, CUIIC. “With the support of Alberta Innovates, NSERC, and our 21 industry partners, we are driving research that will help the sector reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving efficiency and durability.”
The project will focus on innovative materials, construction methods, and maintenance strategies that align with Canada’s climate action goals. By leveraging industry collaboration, CUIIC aims to bridge research with real-world applications, ensuring underground infrastructure projects contribute to a more sustainable future.
