MSc & PhD Positions in Clean Technologies for Underground Infrastructure & AI for GHG Reduction
The University of Alberta’s Canadian Underground Infrastructure Innovation Centre (CUIIC) is offering an exciting opportunity for MSc or PhD students to contribute to a pioneering research initiative focused on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from underground infrastructure. This position is part of an NSERC-funded research program focused on clean technologies and AI-powered decision-making to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the underground infrastructure sector.
About the Project:
This interdisciplinary project aims to accelerate the transition to low-carbon construction practices by identifying sustainable technologies, analyzing relevant policy and incentive frameworks, and building AI-based tools to model and optimize emissions reduction strategies. The successful candidate will work closely with industry stakeholders, municipal leaders, and academic collaborators to bring research from concept to real-world application.
Key Responsibilities:
• Collect and analyze GHG emissions and infrastructure data
• Build and validate AI models and decision-support tools
• Conduct life cycle assessments (LCA) and policy research
• Design and support industry surveys and stakeholder engagement
• Co-author academic publications and present at conferences
Preferred Qualifications:
We are seeking a highly motivated MSc or PhD student with the following:
• Background in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Data Science, AI, Sustainability, or Public Policy
• Experience with machine learning (ML), predictive analytics, or system dynamics modeling (an asset).
• Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, R, or similar tools for modeling and data analysis
• Strong writing, presentation, and collaboration skills
• Interest in sustainable infrastructure, policy development, and climate-focused innovation
• Familiarity with GHG quantification tools (e.g., OpenLCA, SimaPro)
