The Canadian Underground Infrastructure Innovation Centre (CUIIC) at University of Alberta in collaboration with Concordia University and University of Toronto invites applications for multiple NSERC funded positions in sustainable practices in underground infrastructure.
The candidates will work with our integrated interdisciplinary research team, PhD and MSc students, and 21 industry partners in quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the construction, maintenance, and operations of underground infrastructure in Canada and developing practical tools and strategies to minimize emissions.
The candidates will be expected to manage the research project, including defining and delivering on timelines, track project status and team member action items, make day‐to‐day project decisions in alignment with project objectives, and know when to escalate decisions and issues to the larger team.
In addition to development of the inventory tool and system dynamics model, the candidate will also be expected to present research progress and results to the research team, and to write academic research papers as well as reports for funding agencies and partners.
The Research Includes:
- Conducting comprehensive literature reviews on GHG emissions related to underground infrastructure.
- Developing an asset inventory database of GHG emission factors for construction, operations, and maintenance.
- Designing and implementing surveys targeting industry experts to gather data on GHG emissions.
- Analyzing survey responses to identify variability in GHG emissions across utilities and identify emission reduction opportunities.
- Developing an online inventory tool and system dynamics (SD) model for policy makers.
- Investigating values in risk assessment and considering a code of ethics for infrastructure renewal and construction.
- Participating in field data collection and case study development with partner organizations.
- Working on specific projects related to water, wastewater, energy, telecommunications, and power sectors.
- Writing technical reports, research papers, and presentations.
- Disseminating research findings through workshops, conferences, and publications.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications and expertise:
- PhD in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or related fields.
- Experience or education related to sustainable practices in underground infrastructure.
- Demonstrated expertise with survey design, statistical analysis software.
- Demonstrated strength in practices such as stakeholder dynamics, code of ethics development, and values in risk assessment.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate research projects involving multiple researchers.
- Excellent communication skills, ability to work in a group environment, and a demonstrated interest in and capacity for interdisciplinary research.
Start Date: The start date can be as early as Fall 2024 or January 2025 (earlier or later start dates may be considered). This project spans five years.
